The Innovation journey of Blockchain with
Off-Chain technology

With off-chain technology run on blockchain, Estonia has shown the rest of the world just how digitally-enabled a society can become. But achieving this requires many factors to come together.

e-Estonia: Story of Innovative Nation

Estonia was first in the world to test and use blockchain with off-chain technology on national level. Estonia was first in the world to interconnect decentralised components of state and public sector databases at a national level. e-Estonia refers to a movement by the government of Estonia to facilitate citizen interactions with the state through the use of electronic innovation. E-services created under this initiative include i-Voting, e-Tax Board, e-Business, e-Banking, e-Ticket, e-School, University via internet, the E-Governance Academy, as well as the release of several mobile applications.

Where we meet and separate

The country of Estonia, is a real case of using off-chain technology successfully applied to the new generation blockchain, to execute billions of transactions per second (TPS) with high security, customized products for governments and companies in the military, aerospace,... that need extremely high security and segregation, but do not run on smart contracts. The system is closed and not for everyone. Metanode, also uses off-chain technology, but can runs on IoT devices (smart phone, smart watch, smart car,...etc) and executes smart contracts. We are the world's first mobile blockchain platform and open for individual developers, businesses or governments as well, running on the same chain is IoT Chain with the ability of reaching billions of TPS at high security level.

“Blockchain provides truth over trust.”

A unique data integrity solution is offered by the KSI blockchain, developed in Estonia, which can be set up to cover a range of products and services in cloud technology, cyber security, healthcare, finance, and much more to advance digitalisation and adoption of emerging technologies with full assurance.

“Branding itself the first “digital republic” in the world, Estonia has digitised 99% of its public services.”

And, in an era when trust in public services are declining across the globe, Estonia persistently achieves one of the highest ratings of trust in government in the EU. The Estonian government claims that this digitisation of public services saves more than 1,400 years of working time and 2% of its GDP annually.

“Estonia is the first country to offer e-Residency – a government-issued digital identity available to anyone in the world interested in running a global EU company fully online.”

Successful countries must be ready to experiment. Building e-Estonia, one of the most advanced e-societies in the world, has involved continuous experimentation and learning from mistakes. Estonia sees the natural next step in the evolution of the e-state as moving basic services into a fully digital mode: for citizens, things can be done automatically and, in a sense, invisibly.

“Deploying blockchain technology not only ensures protection against any future attacks, but also poses many other benefits to Estonians.”

For example, in most countries citizens have to fill in many different forms with the same personal information (name, address) when they need to access public services from different government agencies. In Estonia, citizens only need to input their personal information once: the blockchain system enables the relevant data to be immediately accessible to the required department.

“Our credo: We constantly seek and develop new digital innovation that allow things to get done faster, better, and cheaper.”

“In 2007, Estonia set a world record for establishing a company
online in 18 minutes.”

When Estonia started building our information society about two decades ago, there was no digital data being collected about our citizens. The general population did not have the internet or even devices with which to use it. It took great courage to invest in IT innovation and take the information technology route. Here are some of our best e-innovation that have led to Estonia becoming one of the world’s most developed digital societies.

The-Real Time Economy (RTE) is an environment where financial and administrative transactions connecting citizens, business and public-sector entities are in structured standardized digital form. These transactions are increasingly generated automatically and completed in real time without store and forward processes.

“Used in multiple fields”

Over the past 15 years, the deep-tech and the research-oriented company has built multiple services and products on top of the KSI blockchain. “We have a horizontally applicable technology that brings the unlimited potential for cybersecurity and process verification in governmental, healthcare, finance, supply chain, and other sectors. Over the past decade, we have built sector-specific products on that platform,”
